About the Maker
Wojciech Topa (1968- ) is a contemporary luthier born and based in the southern Polish town of Zakopane. After initially training under his father, Topa studied violin making at the Zespół Szkół Centrum Kształcenia Rolniczego in Nowy Targ, Poland. He remained in Nowy Targ to apprentice under master luthier Jan Bobak, after which Topa returned to Zakopane and opened his own workshop in 2002. Drawing from both the Cremonese and Kraków methods of violin making, Topa inflects these rich histories with modern ingenuity, making him a luthier deeply admired and venerated by many. Topa’s instruments are treasured by musicians largely due to his extended collaborative efforts with soloists to build instruments that support both classic and contemporary pieces players must maintain in their repertoire. The dynamism, consistency, and gorgeous tones of Topa’s instruments make them highly sought after by players the world over.
