Dyckia brevifolia DJC2014
A smaller, more compact species suitable for pot culture or rock gardens. Several forms exist but most are fairly similar; a 4 to 8 inch leafy rosette with broad leaves tapering to a point, very thick and triangular. The color is light green, glossy and the margins bear moderate, light colored spines. The inflorescence is simple, about 30 inches tall and bears sulfur colored flowers.
After a trip to the habitat of this species we were astonished to find that, as had been rumored to us, this plant grows mainly in river beds on rocks and becomes fully submerged in the river waters, sometime for weeks at a time, several times each year. This habit is referred to as "reophytic". In cultivation it can be grown under normal conditions, potted or in the ground with no more water than most other bromeliad species need. This clone was collected as seed in Rio do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
