Bitterkomix Volume 16
About the publisher:
Anton Kannemeyer (Joe Dog) and Conrad Botes (Konradski) met in 1988 at the University of Stellenbosch where they both studied Graphic Design. They published their first comic (“Case 308”) together in 1989 in Stet, an Afrikaans literary magazine.
In 1992, during their first year of post-graduate studies, they published Bitterkomix No.1, a satirical comic magazine. Shortly after the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994, their comic book Gif (Afrikaner Sekskomix) was banned. In 1999 they published the Best of Bitterkomix Vol.1, which was followed in 2002 by the Best of Bitterkomix Vol. 2. In 2006 Jacana Media published the Big Bad Bitterkomix Handbook, a compilation of covers, posters, commercial work and artworks they did up to that point, including eight essays and a large selection from their sketchbooks.
Although Bitterkomix was published less regularly in the years after 2006, both artists continued to reference and employ the comic art form in their gallery work. In 2009 Bitterkomix was published by L’Association in French, and both Anton and Conrad continued publishing regularly in Europe independently.
In 2019 The Erotic Drawings of Conrad Botes and the re-print of The Erotic Drawings of Anton Kannemeyer were published by Soutie Press and the following year Bitterkomix No. 18 was published.
L’Art Érotique D’ Anton Kannemeyer et Conrad Botes, published by La 5e Couche in Brussels (Jan. 2021). Bitterkomix is also included in Vitamin D3, published by Phaidon in 2021.
